Research and Artist Interpretation

Artist research for my most recent project, the brief was to design a poster to raise awareness of a health-related issue. I have chosen the subject of drugs and in particular, the drug Ketamine.
I primarily looked at the work of David Arias as I think his industrial and contemporary style would appeal to the 16-25 years age range my campaign is aimed at.

Artist interpretation in the style of Arias, using the subject of Ketamine and it's use as a horse tranquiliser.

Drawing Techniques

Biro and oil pastel still life observations of a skeleton. I especially like the effect of the mixed black and blue biro to give a distorted texture but also a smooth gradient.

Illustrations from primary source photos to link in with my anti-ketamine subject mentioned before, using coffee, watercolour, fineliner and pencil.

Biro illustration (right) and double monoprint (left) for use as a setting for an anti-ketamine campaign. The scratchy and distressed texture is just what I was looking for.

Ink/biro illustration for use in a project brief where I was asked to design a poster to entice young people to study in Manchester. The simple and lively colour scheme gives a positive look to an otherwise mundane part of Manchester (below).

Vector Illustration, Typography and Photography

This is the original idea for an Anti-Ketamine campaign with the development below. I wanted to show the main consequence of using Ketamine, memory loss, in an intriguing way. Using wordplay, simple but lifelike typography and vector graphics I have created a dynamic, original and memorable poster that's witty tone appeals to the target audience (16-25yrs).

I would choose a more suitably dark and mysterious setting if I were to do it again.

Lomography

Personal observational photography project using a Demekin Fisheye film camera with expired 110 films, inspired by the style of analogue, spontaneous and authentic photography known as Lomography.

Puppet making and Photo Etching

Idea for an anti-ketamine campaign poster, using clever wordplay (to highlight the fact that Ketamine's primary use is a horse tranquiliser) and photographed handmade paper horse puppets taking influence from Amy Earles.

The puppets are handmade, firstly drawn with fineliner then scanned and vectorised using Illustrator. I used a scalpel, scissors and paper fasteners to make them.

I then photographed the puppets against a photo-etched background I made earlier.

I think this design offers a humorous but sincere message that will appeal to it's target audience (16-25yrs).

Photography

Personal photography project capturing the beauty of English weather as winter is "broken" into through autumn. I smashed a 1x2 metre mirror and used the rain, leaves, grass and ink to show the colours of the season.

Photography and Typography

Anti-chlamydia poster designed for "Be Sure, Be Safe" week, displayed in both Runshaw College and Runshaw Adult College.

Original plan/idea sheet for the poster approved by the client before production.

Poster displayed in Runshaw College student entrance.

Photgraphy, Graphic Design and Typography

Magazine cover designed to highlight the problem of teenage technology addiction, taking influence from David Carson and Innerpartysystem's band artwork.
I think the Carson-influenced typography and the imagery do well to portray the idea of teenagers being "trapped" by technology, and the distorted textures add to the unease of the piece.

Tattoo Design

Upper arm tattoo designed for a friend. The client wanted suitable typography to match his feelings towards his past.

T-shirt Design

Personal project, hand drawn self representation on a t-shirt using laundry markers, includes illustrations that explain who I am and what I enjoy.

Photomontage and Collage

150/80cm self representation photomontage taking influence from David Hockney. Comprising 117 individual photos arranged to give a 360 degree view of my room, and other materials.
I would like to take on another project like this as I find Hockney's photomontage work fascinating, and I like that a 360 degree view of a room or any other setting can perplex and fascinate the viewer.

Photography, Illustration and Typography

Poster designed to entice young people to study in Manchester, taking influence from Andy Potts and Miles Donovan.
I think the colour scheme and textures do well to portray a positive and lively view of Manchester, but using images of more popular landmarks of the city would make it more instantly recognisable.

This is my original final piece for this brief but I decided to refine it by making it appear cleaner, brighter and more contemporary.
